KCCA has distanced self from the razing down of structures which form part of St.Balikuddembe Market, one of the biggest markets in the country.

The structures located on the boundary of Nakivubo Chanel along Ssebaana Road were on Saturday night razed down by bulldozers at around 10pm.

However, in a statement, KCCA said the demolition was done by unidentified persons without authorization.

“This reckless demolition, carried out under the cover of darkness, was done without obtaining demolition permit from the City Authority,” the statement said.

KCCA said working with sister agencies, they are working to salvage what remains of the structure and ensure that those responsible for this destruction of a public good are brought to book.

“Operators of the two machines which were being used to demolish have been arrested by the police and investigations into the matter have commenced,” KCCA said.

The market has for long been a subject of disputes regarding ownership, management, and planned redevelopment, leading to legal battles, court-ordered injunctions, and partial structure removals

The latest development has once again reignited fear among traders in St.Balikuddembe over plans to have the market razed down and the area redeveloped.
